Jonathan Joseph Candido (December 23, 1913 - May 19, 1999) is an American actor born in New Orleans, Louisiana. His deep, gravel-sounding voice instantly put him on the radio, launching him the start of his voice-over career. Candido (pronounced Can-Dee-Doe) became a regular on the Jimmy Durante Show where his memorable catchphrase, "I'm feeling mighty low" was born. It became so popular, he turned it into a song with Durante. The 60's was a great decade for Candido as he became more popular with his voice being heard as a skeleton in Abbot and Costello in the Foreign Legion (1950) and the voice of Gentle Ben from a TV series of the same name.

Candido's voice became even more popular in animation. Both his speaking and singing voice are hilariously heard in The Phantom Tollbooth (1970) as the Awful DYNN along with playing Sal from Ralph Bakshi's Hey Good Lookin' (1982). During the 1950's, he soon joined with The Walt Disney Company to perform many memorable animated characters. He can be heard as the Indian Chief from Peter Pan (1953), Maleficent's Goon from Sleeping Beauty (1959), the Captain of the Guards from Robin Hood (1973) Brutus/Nero, the two crocs from The Rescuers (1977) and Professor Ratigan's henchman, Fidget the bat, from The Great Mouse Detective (1986). Other than Disney films, Candido can be heard at Disneyland as the Graveyard Executioner in the Haunted Mansion and various Goons inside the Sleeping Beauty Castle walk through.

In 1990, Candido offered his vocal talent in animation for one last time as the voice of the Apple Tree in "The Wizard of Oz" series. The show, based on the 1939 MGM classic, was not a huge success and only lasted one season. Candido quietly enjoyed the rest of the decade up until 1999 when he died of natural causes in his sleep at the age of 85. He is survived by his wife, Anita.
